Elastic releases the Detection Engineering Behavior Maturity Model

This document introduces Elastic’s Detection Engineering Behavior Maturity Model (DEBMM), a structured framework to mature detection engineering through five tiers (Foundation to Expert) with detailed qualitative behaviors and quantitative metrics. It guides teams on building and maintaining high-quality detection rulesets, covering criteria such as baseline coverage, rule management (Detections as Code), telemetry quality, threat modeling, tuning to reduce false positives/negatives, internal and external validation, advanced TTP coverage, proactive hunting, and automation including AI/LLMs. The model emphasizes continuous improvement, alignment with established frameworks (NIST CSF, MITRE ATT&CK), and practical steps for assessment, roadmap development, implementation, measurement, and iteration.
