Russian national convicted for running botnet used in attacks on U.S. firms

Russian national Ilya Angelov was sentenced to 24 months in prison, fined $100,000, and ordered to pay a $1.6M judgment for co-managing the TA551 ("Mario Kart") botnet, which spread malware via spam and sold access to infected machines to ransomware groups; the botnet was tied to infections of over 70 U.S. companies and more than $14 million in extortion payments.
