Chrome to Block Policy-Abusing Extensions on Personal Devices

Google is developing changes to Chrome to prevent extensions from abusing enterprise management policies on unmanaged Windows and macOS devices; attackers have been fooling Chrome into treating personal systems as managed to force-install persistent extensions that hijack the New Tab page or default search. The update will detect when enterprise policies are being abused on consumer devices and refuse or remove policy-installed extensions that alter those browser settings, reducing a common persistence mechanism used by malicious extensions.
