The UK government confirmed that sensitive data from 500,000 UK Biobank participants — including DNA sequences, health measures, and socioeconomic/lifestyle information — was discovered listed for sale on Alibaba. Although direct identifiers (names, phone numbers, addresses, NHS numbers) were reportedly absent, the listings appear to have originated from three Chinese research institutions that violated access agreements rather than from an external hack; listings have been taken down, access to the Biobank platform has been temporarily restricted, and formal investigations (including referral to the ICO) are underway.
