Microsoft Teams to Begin Sharing Employee Location with Employers Based on Wi-Fi Networks

Microsoft is introducing an optional Teams feature (rolling out in early-to-mid March 2026 for Windows and Mac desktops) that auto-updates employee work locations when connected to corporate Wi‑Fi or mapped peripherals, clearing data after work hours and at day’s end. Although off by default and requiring admin configuration, tenant administrators can enable and potentially mandate it, raising surveillance and hybrid work policy concerns. Experts urge organizations to define clear governance—covering purpose, access, acceptable use, and limits—across IT, HR, workplace, and security teams to prevent drift from collaboration into monitoring or enforcement.
