Applying the NIST CSF to U.S. election security

This blog post evaluates U.S. state and local election security through the lens of the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, scoring and discussing gaps across Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond, and Recover. It highlights three core challenges—lack of standardization across thousands of local jurisdictions, diverse and aging voting infrastructure, and inconsistent training for election volunteers—notes supply chain and detection limitations (especially for offline voting machines), and calls for a coordinated, CSF-based assessment across all 50 states to improve resilience, transparency, and public trust.
