Submission to the UN’s call for input on the application of digital technologies in the administration of justice

In March 2024, researchers from The Citizen Lab, Griffith University, and the University of Leuven submitted comments to the UN OHCHR on the application of digital technologies in the administration of justice, raising ethical and human rights concerns about widespread forensic DNA collection and analysis by law enforcement—highlighting indiscriminate data collection, use of genetic genealogy databases without consent, and limited oversight and transparency—and urging stronger oversight, transparency, and protections for genetic data.
