The report analyzes Amazon’s amazon.com shipping-restriction system and finds 17,050 products restricted in at least one region, with books being the most commonly affected—especially on topics like LGBTIQ, astrology, pornography, Christianity, and health—across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, other Middle Eastern countries, Brunei, Papua New Guinea, Seychelles, and Zambia; in the sample, over 1.1% of books were censored in at least one such region. The authors identify three main censorship lists, document overbroad and misclassified bans (e.g., breast cancer books, “food porn” cookbooks, Nietzsche’s The Gay Science, Mentos “rainbow”), and note opaque/misleading customer messages. Preliminary tests suggest Kindle ebooks are also regionally restricted based on account location. The authors contacted Amazon on October 23, 2024, but had received no reply by November 25, 2024, and recommend clearer legal notices, transparency, a user reporting mechanism for misclassification, and periodic regional reviews of censorship categories.
