A New York Times article based on Kaspersky Lab research describes the Carbanak cybercrime campaign in which attackers used malware-laden email attachments to infiltrate bank networks in about 30 countries, maintained months-long access to steal credentials and manipulate systems, and executed fraudulent SWIFT transfers and ATM cash-outs that resulted in reported losses of roughly $300M to possibly $900M across more than 100 banks.
