The Electronic Frontier Foundation announced the Open Router project to develop secure, open-source firmware and a safer management UI for home and SOHO routers in response to recent incidents and research showing widespread router compromises and remotely exploitable firmware flaws (including a Team Cymru report claiming ~300,000 compromised SOHO routers and a reported TP-Link firmware vulnerability). The project aims to improve auto-update security and harden routers against web-interface attacks while inviting developers and researchers to contribute.
