AI Adoption Surges While Governance Lags — Report Warns of Growing Shadow Identity Risk

The 2025 State of AI Data Security Report by Cybersecurity Insiders finds that while 83% of organizations use AI in daily operations, only a small fraction have strong visibility or governance: 13% report strong visibility, 7% have dedicated AI governance teams, and 11% feel prepared for emerging regulation. The report highlights frequent over-access of sensitive data by AI, limited ability to block risky autonomous agent actions, and widespread lack of monitoring for prompts and outputs, and recommends data-centric oversight, continuous discovery, real-time monitoring, and treating AI as a distinct identity with narrowly scoped access.
