Tech, Retail Firms Propose Privacy Standards for Internet of Things

The Online Trust Alliance published an Internet of Things Trust Framework proposing strong privacy, security, and sustainability standards for consumer IoT devices, including end-to-end encryption, mandatory retirement of default passwords, transparent privacy disclosures on packaging, lifecycle patching and data-purging capabilities; the guidelines aim to curb aggressive data-harvesting practices and improve long-term device management, motivated in part by past SmartTV data-collection controversies.
