Researchers from Bellingcat and De Correspondent demonstrated that Polar fitness app’s public data and its Explore feature exposed the locations, names, routes, and routines of 6,460 users across more than 200 sensitive sites (military bases, nuclear storage locations, embassies, etc.), potentially endangering personnel and revealing home addresses; Polar temporarily suspended the Explore API and warned users while researchers urged governments and companies to reassess use and defaults of such fitness apps.
