Researchers demonstrated and released proof-of-concept "BadUSB" malware that reprograms USB device controller firmware to impersonate other devices (for example, emulating a keyboard to issue commands or a network card to alter DNS). The public release of the code at conferences prompted calls for manufacturers to fix the underlying vulnerability, as infected USB controllers could make large numbers of users and devices vulnerable.
