Smart TV + Rogue App = Surveillance Device

Researchers at Pen Test Partners demonstrated a proof-of-concept in which a rogue Android application, sideloaded onto a Sony Bravia smart TV running Android Lollipop, used an external microphone to capture spoken words, transcribe them, and send the text to a remote laptop — illustrating how outdated IoT devices and malicious apps can be misappropriated for surveillance and privacy invasion, and noting the risk that similar apps could reach users via app stores or user-enabled sideloading.
