A fast-spreading outbreak of malware dubbed “NotPetya” (disguised as Petya ransomware) rapidly affected organizations from Ukraine across Europe to the United States and Brazil, crippling PCs, bank machines and cash registers; analysts argue the code was designed to cause destructive mayhem rather than to reliably collect ransom payments.
