The Challenge of Securing REST APIs

This article discusses security challenges specific to RESTful APIs — including use of HTTP methods, JSON/XML payloads, URL path parameters, programmatic access, and ‘chatty’ interactions — and explains why traditional web scanners and penetration testing struggle to identify REST attack surfaces and inputs. It summarizes common issues (difficult URL discovery, lack of out-of-band metadata, dynamic URLs, and lengthy test cycles) and previews design- and security-focused approaches to mitigate these problems in a following installment.
