Facebook doubled its Internet Defense Prize to $100,000 and awarded it to Georgia Tech researchers for a paper and tool (CAVER) that detect incorrect static type casting in C++ programs. The researchers applied CAVER to Chromium and Firefox and reported 11 previously unknown vulnerabilities (nine in GNU libstdc++ and two in Firefox) which were confirmed and fixed; the work aims to allow performance-friendly static casts while catching bad casts at runtime.
