Update: DHS Funding Research into secure updates for Vehicles

The Department of Homeland Security awarded approximately $3.7 million in grants to two projects aimed at improving connected-vehicle security—$1.2M to the University of Michigan to develop secure over-the-air (SOTA) update specifications and reference code, and $2.5M to Hughes Research Laboratories for side-channel causal analysis to detect cyber-physical inconsistencies—driven by concerns after researchers demonstrated remote control of a Jeep Cherokee and intended to produce standards and early-warning capabilities rather than regulatory actions.
