Identity Management’s Next Frontier: The Interstate

The GAO report warns that vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications are nearing broader deployment but face significant security and privacy hurdles—chiefly identity management and certificate infrastructure (PKI). DOT and automakers are testing prototypes and pilots, yet technical and management frameworks (certificate issuance, validation, and revocation) remain undefined; DEFCON demonstrations have shown remote-sensor attacks that could induce unsafe vehicle behavior, underscoring the need for stronger authentication, certificate management, and misbehavior detection before rollout.
