Governments Face Privacy, Security Reckoning On Data Retention

Panelists at an RSA Conference discussion warned that federal, state and local governments are attractive targets for cybercriminals and nation-state actors due to vast data collection, weak security practices and constrained budgets; they cited recent ransomware infections at local agencies, concerns about license-plate scanning and vendor data sharing, and recommended better funding, clearer data-retention laws and cross-border cooperation, while noting no easy or immediate solutions.
