A BitSight survey of over 35,000 companies found that organizations running outdated web browsers or operating systems were significantly more likely to experience publicly disclosed breaches — firms with many out-of-date browsers were over twice as likely, and those with outdated OS on more than half their machines were nearly three times as likely. The report cites the WannaCry ransomware outbreak as an example of older Windows systems being disproportionately impacted, underscoring that failure to keep software current increases breach risk.
