EU Auditors Find Weaknesses in Anti-Fraud System

An auditors’ report by the European Court of Auditors concludes that EU anti-fraud efforts are hindered by weak information exchange between OLAF and EPPO and insufficient European Commission oversight of recoveries, noting that from 2022–2024 OLAF recommended €615M be recovered but only €23M was actually recovered while EPPO froze €3B and courts ordered €232M in 2024; the report urges streamlined reporting and feedback loops, analysis of reporting disparities, and a methodology to measure investigative impact, with calls for a central reporting register and systematic tracking of EU fund recoveries.
