OCCRP named ousted Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad its 2024 'Person of the Year' for widespread corruption and organized crime, citing human rights abuses and financing through Captagon production, smuggling, and other illicit activities that fueled regional instability. For the first time, a special 'Lifetime Non-Achievement Award' was also given to Equatorial Guinea’s President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo for decades of brutal repression, disappearances, and torture.
