Climate of Fear in Guinea-Bissau as Junta Targets Critics, Activists Say

Following a Nov. 26 coup in Guinea-Bissau, authorities seized power, destroyed election servers, banned demonstrations, and allegedly carried out arbitrary detentions and violent attacks against activists and opposition figures, according to the Liga Guineense dos Direitos Humanos. International bodies including the UN, African Union, and European Parliament condemned the crackdown and called for releases and an end to intimidation, while transitional authorities have not publicly addressed the allegations.
