Kyrgyz President Signs Law Targeting “False Information” as Court Shuts Down Independent Broadcaster

Kyrgyzstan enacted a law allowing authorities to fine individuals (~$228) and organizations (~$743) for alleged misinformation online and in mass media, drawing criticism from NGOs over press freedom. The move coincided with a Bishkek court ordering the shutdown of independent broadcaster April TV, dissolving its legal entity and blocking its social media for allegedly discrediting authorities and inciting unrest. Authorities previously used similar tactics against OCCRP member Kloop, with journalists detained for alleged incitement, and it remains unclear whether April TV will appeal.
