The MITRE Funding Fiasco: A Call for Future-Ready Cyber Defense 

This report argues that the recent funding crisis affecting MITRE’s CVE program exposes systemic fragility in vulnerability management, warning of cascading impacts on NVD, security tools, incident response, and critical infrastructure if CVE enrichment falters. It reviews partial alternatives (ENISA/EUVD, NVD, VulDB, OSV) and critiques reactive patching, slow zero-day response, and insufficient proactive risk reduction. The piece advocates a “future-ready” security posture focused on prevention and resilience—highlighting anti-ransomware measures, Adaptive Exposure Management (AEM), Automated Moving Target Defense (AMTD), virtual patching, patchless protection, and ring-fencing—positioned as ways to reduce dependency on CVEs and better counter modern threats.
