The Apache 2.0 Revolution: Google’s Gemma 4 Shatters the Open-Source Intelligence Ceiling

Google announced the open-source Gemma 4 family of models (2B, 4B effective models for edge; 26B MoE and 31B dense for larger systems) and moved model weights to the Apache 2.0 license. The suite is multimodal (image, OCR, audio on the smaller models), supports 140+ languages, enables offline code generation, and is available via Hugging Face, Kaggle, and Ollama — a shift from the prior Gemma License to permit broader on-premises and commercial use.
