Project 20/20: Microsoft’s Radical Plan to Cure Windows 11’s “Memory Hunger”

Microsoft has revived Project 20/20, an initiative to reduce the storage and memory footprint of a clean Windows 11 installation by about 20% (targeting roughly 6GB → 4.8GB). The plan centers on migrating heavyweight components—such as the Start menu—from the WebView2 runtime to the native WinUI 3 framework to lower background memory use and improve responsiveness on lower-end devices.
