The End of Unlimited AI: GitHub Copilot Shifts to “Pay-as-You-Go” Credits to Power the Agentic Era

GitHub will transition Copilot to usage-based billing effective June 1, 2026: each subscription tier receives monthly AI credits equal to the subscription fee, users can purchase additional credits, consumption is measured by token throughput with model-specific multipliers (e.g., Claude 3.7 Opus at 7.5x), and enterprise plans allow shared credit pools; a billing-preview tool will be available in May to help forecast costs.
