Microsoft will change Windows NT kernel driver trust starting April 2026 so that only drivers signed via the Windows Hardware Compatibility Program (WHCP) are trusted on Windows 11 (24H2, 25H2, 26H1 and later) and Windows Server 2025 and beyond. This shift may render legacy or vendor-abandoned drivers inoperable for some enterprise and industrial devices; Microsoft proposes three compatibility measures: a curated exceptions list, an initial telemetry-driven evaluation phase, and enterprise application control to permit legacy or internally signed drivers.
