Be Vigilant: BEC Attacks Are on the Rise

Business Email Compromise (BEC) activity rose 13% month-over-month, with average requested wire transfers increasing to $39,315 (up 60% from January 2025). Most attacks abused legitimate email services—73% originated from free webmail accounts, primarily Google (76% of 1,036 accounts)—and requested amounts clustered between $10,000 and $50,000 (62%), with 25% under $10,000 and 12% over $100,000. Researchers also note intensified reconnaissance and profiling aimed at larger financial targets, leveraging delayed fraud detection to increase success.
