Human Error Remains at the Core of AI-Enabled Social Engineering

Resilience's H1 2026 analysis shows AI-driven social engineering and phishing now account for the bulk of insured losses (85.3%), a sharp increase from 17.7% in H1 2024; ransomware remains the single most expensive loss (around 73% year-to-date), with a shift toward data-theft-only extortion that backups cannot mitigate. The report urges CISOs to strengthen social-engineering simulations beyond email and improve identity containment and exfiltration detection.
