Cybersecurity in the SMB space — a growing threat

Kaspersky’s 2024 SMB threat analysis reports a rise in attacks leveraging files that mimic widely used business applications (2,402 users targeted via 4,110 unique files) and an increase in overall infections to 138,046 from January–April 2024 (~5% YoY), with trojans remaining the top threat and “DangerousObject” detections growing as attackers evolve. It details phishing via spoofed Microsoft services, email and social media account abuse, SMB-focused spam, and recommends controls such as strict access governance, regular backups, employee awareness training, strong passwords and MFA, and specialized, cloud-aware security solutions.
