Wardriving assessment across Mexico: Preparing for the 2026 World Cup

Kaspersky GReAT performed a passive wardriving assessment in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey to analyze public Wi‑Fi deployment, security configurations and exposure risks; across ~84.6k signals (~69.5k unique SSIDs) they found widespread use of default ISP/vendor SSIDs, heavy 2.4 GHz concentration (channels 11/6/1), significant numbers of open networks (~10–12%), extensive WPS advertising (~40–47% by city, ~45% overall), and many secure networks where WPS remains enabled—concluding that configuration and metadata exposure, not encryption alone, drive operational risk and recommending disabling WPS, avoiding default/identifying SSIDs, and migrating to modern Wi‑Fi standards.
