A criminal cartel contracted a hacker to identify and surveil people of interest (including an FBI Assistant Legal Attaché) entering and leaving the U.S. embassy in Mexico City, monitoring their calls and locations and using city cameras to follow them; according to a Justice OIG report cited by Cyberscoop, the collected intelligence was used to intimidate and, in some cases, kill cooperating witnesses.
