KnowBe4 disclosed that a newly hired software engineer was a North Korean state-linked operative who tried to load malware onto a company-issued workstation; while the attempt was detected and blocked, the company’s subsequent white paper reveals a sophisticated, industrialized program that places fake IT workers—often trained in North Korea and operating abroad—into organizations worldwide to generate revenue for the regime and sometimes conduct espionage, and provides indicators and mitigations for spotting these fake employees during hiring and after onboarding.
