FBI: Cybercrime Losses Rocket to $16.6B in 2024

According to the FBI IC3 Internet Crime Report 2024, U.S. victims reported a record $16.6 billion in internet-related losses across 859,532 complaints, with phishing, extortion, and personal data breaches the most common incidents; ransomware—led by actors such as Akira, LockBit, RansomHub, Fog, and Play and accompanied by dozens of new variants—remained the most pervasive threat to critical infrastructure, prompting calls for continued reporting to IC3 and an "assume breach" defensive posture.
