In December, a destructive cyberattack attributed to Russian-backed actors (suspected Sandworm) compromised Kyivstar, Ukraine's largest telecom, wiping core systems and disrupting service for roughly 24 million users for about four days. The attackers reportedly had long-term access since May 2023, exfiltrated personal data (location, SMS and data risking Telegram account takeover), likely leveraged an insider for initial access, and left Kyivstar largely destroyed before recovery efforts completed by Dec. 20 with SBU assistance.
