Cybercrime Forces Local Law Enforcement to Shift Focus

Last November an Idaho man was sentenced to 10 years after hacking into servers belonging to 19 victims, stealing PII for over 132,000 people and attempting Bitcoin extortion; he bought access to compromised servers via a cybercrime forum and exfiltrated records from a medical clinic and a police department. The report highlights rising cybercrime volumes, the resource and jurisdictional challenges confronting local law enforcement, and the need for stronger public–private partnerships and cyber capabilities.
