City of Columbus Sues Researcher After Ransomware Attack

Columbus, Ohio experienced a ransomware attack on July 18 attributed to the Rhysida gang, which later posted a 3.1 TB data leak on a Tor site claiming to have stolen intact sensitive records including names and Social Security numbers. The city initially said malware was blocked and offered credit monitoring only to employees, later expanding it to all impacted individuals; it has since pursued legal action against a researcher who accessed and publicized the leaked data and a judge issued a temporary restraining order restricting dissemination of that data.
