AsyncRAT, an open-source C# remote access Trojan released in 2019, has produced a large ecosystem of forks and variants—ranging from novelty builds to dangerous threats such as DcRAT and VenomRAT—that add advanced obfuscation, AMSI/ETW bypass, credential theft, remote access plugins, and even ransomware modules; ESET telemetry indicates global, decentralized use by mostly lone actors, delivered commonly via phishing and increasingly aided by automated tools (e.g., GenAI), and the report recommends layered defenses combining behavioral, network, and endpoint detection and response.
