860K Compromised in Columbia University Data Breach

Columbia University disclosed a data breach stemming from an unauthorized access on May 16 that resulted in theft of files affecting nearly 870,000 people, including applicants, students, and employees. The stolen data reportedly includes names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, contact and demographic details, academic history, financial aid and insurance/health information; the university is offering two years of credit monitoring and identity restoration services and reports no evidence so far of misuse or impact to medical center patient records.
