Cybercriminals Tap Greasy Opal to Create 750M Fake Microsoft Accounts

Greasy Opal, a machine-learning and computer-vision powered bot service, is being used to carry out volumetric bot attacks and large-scale fake account creation — Arkose Labs reports that the Vietnam-linked group Storm-1152 used it to generate 750 million fake Microsoft accounts, prompting Microsoft to seize related domains. The report warns these commercialized tools lower the barrier to cybercrime by automating CAPTCHA bypass and recommends defense-in-depth and AI-driven mitigation (CDN, WAF, CIAM) to detect and stop AI-powered bot threats.
