Congress Advances Bill to Add AI to National Vulnerability Database

The House Science, Space and Technology Committee advanced the bipartisan AI Incident Reporting and Security Enhancement Act to authorize NIST to create a formal process for reporting AI security incidents and to incorporate AI systems into the National Vulnerability Database. Lawmakers expressed concern about NIST’s funding and capacity to handle the added workload, requested clearer definitions for terms like "substantial artificial intelligence security incident," and called for NIST to consult federal agencies, private-sector organizations, standards bodies, and civil society to develop a common lexicon for reporting.
