Hired Hacker Assists Drug Cartel in Finding, Killing FBI Sources

The DOJ Office of Inspector General audit reports that the Sinaloa cartel hired a hacker who conducted digital surveillance—including mobile-phone call records, geolocation data, and use of Mexico City cameras—on FBI personnel and persons of interest in the El Chapo case, which the cartel used to intimidate and in some cases kill potential sources; the OIG warns that ubiquitous technical surveillance (UTS) poses a serious threat to FBI operations and criticizes gaps in the FBI's mitigation, red-team efforts, and strategic planning.
