The U.S. Department of Commerce has proposed banning software and hardware from foreign adversaries (primarily China and Russia) in connected vehicles on U.S. roads, citing risks of surveillance and remote control; the proposal would effectively bar nearly all Chinese vehicles, prohibit adversary testing of self-driving cars, allow limited exemptions via authorization, set the software ban for the 2027 model year and the hardware ban for the 2030 model year (or January 2029), and opens a 30-day public comment period with finalization aimed for Jan. 20.
