NIST Enhances Security Controls for Improved Patching

NIST updated its Security and Privacy Control Catalog to improve software update and patch-release processes, adding three key changes: a standardized logging syntax for security events, a requirement for root-cause analysis of update failures, and guidance to design systems for cyber resiliency. The revisions aim to reduce the attack window, support automation and incident response, and strengthen supply-chain and update coordination; they were driven by a June executive order and implemented using a new real-time commenting system.
