Russia designated cyber threat intelligence firm Recorded Future as an “undesirable” organization, effectively banning its operations and interactions in the country. Authorities cited its U.S. funding, cyber threat focus, dark web analysis, and alleged collaboration with foreign intelligence, as well as its reporting on the Ukraine war and Russian military activities. The announcement, which mislabeled the company as an NGO, coincides with Recorded Future’s planned $2.65B acquisition by Mastercard; CEO Christopher Ahlberg publicly framed the designation as a rare compliment.
