**AnonSudan**, run by two Sudanese brothers, operated a DDoS-for-hire service (marketed as Skynet/InfraShutdown/Godzilla botnet) that launched large Layer 7 attacks and extortion campaigns against hospitals, major cloud providers, Microsoft, PayPal, Twitter/X, OpenAI, U.S. government sites, and national infrastructure (including a week-long outage in Kenya); U.S. authorities arrested the suspects in March 2024, seized their infrastructure, and charged them with conspiracy and damaging protected computers, with potential severe penalties for attacks that targeted emergency services.
